Jessica and Cara Walker were hard at work on Lila's birthday banner in the student lounge when Elizabeth and Enid came in. "What's that?" Elizabeth asked her twin, coming over to inspect their handiwork.
"It's supposed to be like a trade union banner. Each panel is going to represent a different aspect of Lila's life," Jessica said proudly. "See, this panel is 'Lila Shopping.' See all the different outfits we've got painted already? The next is 'Lila Giving Parties.' This is supposed to be Fowler Crest."
Elizabeth giggled as she stepped back to survey the enormous banner. "What if she finds it? Where are you guys hiding something that big?"
"We're keeping it in the art room. Don't worry, we've got Lila under control," Jessica said serenely.
Enid sat down on a couch, her expression thoughtful as she took an envelope out of her notebook. "My grandmother's latest letter," she murmured to Elizabeth. "Believe it or not, I haven't had time to read it yet. And I got it yesterday!"
"How is your grandmother?" Elizabeth asked with concern. She knew that, since her grandfather had died, Enid had been particularly worried about her grandmother, who lived alone in Chicago. It had only been a few months since his death, and Enid and her mother were concerned about what would be the most sensible step to take next.
Enid opened the letter and scanned the first few lines. "She sounds so lonesome," she said sadly. "I think I'm going to suggest to my mother that we ask her to move in with us."
"Where would you put her?" Jessica cut in, oblivious to the fact that Enid was talking only to Elizabeth.
Enid shrugged. "I know our house isn't big, but Nana is so wonderful. It would be worth crowding a little. Besides, I hate to think of her in Chicago all by herself. She must be very lonely."
Jessica rolled her eyes. "Much as I love my grandparents, I sure wouldn't be thrilled if they moved in. Our house is too crowded as it is. Luckily I can keep some of my clothes in Steven's closet."
Elizabeth groaned. "Our hearts are bleeding for you, Jess," she said dryly. She turned back to her friend. "I think your idea is wonderful, Enid. And I bet your mother would be completely behind it if you wrote to your grandmother and asked her to think about moving out here."
Enid jumped up, her eyes sparkling. "I'm going to bring it up first thing when I get home!" she declared. "I bet you're right, Elizabeth. I bet my mom will be absolutely thrilled, if she hasn't already thought of the same thing herself."
